Biography

Shomik is a third-year graduate student working on multi-scale modeling and design of efficient thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems. He is specifically interested in reducing parasitic sub-bandgap absorption in the TPV cells, optimizing charge-discharge profiles of the graphite-based thermal storage system, and designing a new, efficient combustor for TPV heat generation. He conducts both atomistic-level DFT simulations and macro-scale CFD modeling to inform design decisions.

Prior to joining the ASE group, Shomik completed Masters degrees in Materials Science at Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge through the Marshall Scholarship, where he worked on machine learning for high-throughput screening of spectral conversion materials with Prof. Aron Walsh and 3D printing of luminescent solar concentrators with Prof. Rachel Evans. He received his B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University, where he conducted research on solar thermal hydrogen production and hydrogen fuel cell optimization for vehicle applications.

Outside of research, Shomik enjoys Indian classical music (specifically tabla), playing basketball and badminton, and watching/reading sci-fi.
